Job Opening: Science Operations Scientist in High-Energy Astronomy

The European Space Agency will soon publish a vacancy in the Directorate of Science for a position assigned jointly to the XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL missions, requiring a PhD in astrophysics. Initially, the selected person will be responsible for high-energy astronomy cross-calibration, scientific data processing and archive product generation. Activities will be performed in collaboration with staff in currently operating high-energy missions and in the ESAC Science Data Centre, including coordinating of the work of companies providing services to support these tasks. Working in this position will mean a significant role in calibration and especially cross-calibration of current and upcoming high-energy missions as well as in shaping the future of data processing and archives for high-energy missions, with the possibility of evolving into coordination and managerial tasks. Applications from qualified candidates from ESA member states, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics, are welcome. Please check jobs.esa.int for the full information and on how to apply.

New Safe Mode

Since the failure of the propellant system in 2020, science mission operations have been successfully carried out using the Z-flip algorithm to control angular momentum. However, the loss of manoeuvrability left INTEGRAL vulnerable to further failures, and engineers at MOC have been working on the design of an alternative safe mode, now referred to as the New Safe Mode (NSM). Commissioning operations of this mode were completed last week as planned with no major incidents or anomalies. The NSM works fantastically well, capable of correcting any single Attitude and Orbit Control System failure quickly and safely. Following the successful commissioning of the NSM the decision was taken to leave NSM on-board active and enabled.
