Brave ideas are born when the brain is in
restricted sleeping mode. So here is another option,

Information about the time integration intervals can
be "coded" into the event times as follows:

If N events are recorded in an integration interval.
One of them is given the time at the beginning of
the interval. The rest (N-1) gets the time at the midpoint
(as now). [There is alway >> 1 count in an interval
so no confusion.] One can then reconstruct the raw bins 
without any additional information (even if there 
are data gaps).
