Gain Notes for Revolution 465 JEM-X1: This is a quite problematic revolution because it contains several automatic switchoffs that were necessary to protect the detector from the very high countrates produced by the strong source, Sco X-1 which was in the FOV. Unfortunately at high countrates where grey filtering is used to protect the telemetry stream from overflow, Sco X-1 can contaminate the calibration spectra for the weakest calibration source (#4, purple/orange) and cause the sorts of problems seen here. Sco X-1 is very soft and in some cases gets interpreted as the calibration spectrum. This can compromise the gain smoothing fit for the last calibration spectra in a number of places, and an IC gain history table available with the Instrument Characteristics file from ISDC needed to successfully correct science data from the entire revolution. However, in the absence of such a table, the science data will be incorrectly gain-corrected in the periods IJD=2407.4 to 2407.8 and IJD=2408.73 to 2408.9. These are the intervals where gain smoothing does not fit the raw calibration data correctly. If you have ANY questions about processing this data, please contact me, at oxborrow@space.dtu.dk. This problem is now fixed by using OSA 6.0 and later versions. The corrected gain history table, with the outlying points corrected, is delivered to ISDC as an instrument characteristics (IC) file. The analysis scripts can find these IC files if one exists for a particular revolution, and use it instead of the automatically generated file. If you don't have OSA 6.0 installed, or do not have the latest IC files use the following quick fix. The results shown here without the label `uncorrected' have been derived using the IC gain history. QUICK FIX: Download the corrected gain history table that has all the source four outliers removed. This is to be found in column `Other data and results' of the table containing these notes. Put the file in your own private directory say , and unzip it (gzip -d JMX1_gainHistoryIC_rev0465_001.fits.gz). When you run the OSA GUI you must correct the hidden parameter gainHist so that it points to the corrected gain history table: COR_gainHist = /JMX1_gainHistoryIC_rev0465_001.fits[JMX1-GAIN-OCL,1] The Xe line analysis clearly shows that energy determination is very good for the entire revolution if the IC Gain History Table is used. The only exceptions are the first science windows immediately after switch on, which should be avoided as a general rule. The average Xe line position is 29.8 keV, less than 1% from the ideal value.
