Picture of the Month

November 2001

Image produced from data taken with the SPI flight model during the science calibration. It is based on exposures of a radioactive 60Co source at 125m distance (~ parallel beam), selecting the 1173 keV line. The data were combined in such a way as to emulate a `dithering' observation of two sources separated by 2 degrees.

The image was generated with the Maximum Entropy method using the software at the ISDC. It demonstrates that SPI is capable of resolving sources to better than 2 degrees.
